 The Postmaster-General's Department tested an imported OCR (Optical Character Reading) Letter Sorting Machine in 1972.While it cannot be said with absolute certainty, this card is believed to have come from those trials as it was found in a box of test mail surviving from the 1970s coding tests. 

 

The tests in 1972 were inconclusive as the computer in the OCR was programmed for the more structured oriental text and had a poor recognition rate of the occidental handwriting
