The latest stamp issue from Vanuata Post released on February 20, 2008 features the local Coconut Crab. A land crab, the Coconut crab is a famous Vanuatu delicacy which is the cause of its numbers being seriouslt depleted and requiring protection.

They get their name because they climb palm trees to feed on coconut flesh (which explains why they have such strength in the nippers).

They have to survive until they are between 4 and 8 years old before they can reproduce and can have a life expectancy of 30 years. However, the tourist trade has increased the demand for this delicacy at local restaurants.
